Peter Roaf (left) was moderator of a panel presentation on one of Rotary International’s seven Areas of Focus (displayed behind), on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene. Seated on left was Luke Vorstermans, of RC Gibsons, on Hippo Rollers, tanks of water rolled like a wheelbarrow to transport 5 times the water a woman can transport vs the 40-pound bucket on head method in South African villages, freeing women for other tasks and more of a life. Rosette Nabuuma, of RC Kampala Nsambya, Uganda, on sani-pads program for girls in Uganda to keep them in school full time and break down barriers. Mike Storey, from RC Ladner, on Adopt A Village and water filters for families in remote villages of Northern Laos. Dr. Jianbing Li, a research scientist and engineer on a water purification system for communities in Northern BC which experienced unpotable drinking water for many years, in a number of cases, First Nations communities. | |
Rotary District 5040’s Rotarian of the Year Award presented to Peter Roaf by District Governor Lorne Calder (centre) and Mayor of Carpinteria, California, and long standing Rotary International leader Wade Nomura, who was conference representative of this year’s Rotary International President, Shekhar Mehta, who lives in Calcutta, India. Wade has been involved in over 200 charitable Rotary projects across the globe and has been on more than 50 international project missions for Rotary, including a polio mission to India, a special passion of his as a childhood polio survivor himself.
