Updates on Rotary Foundation Grant Seminar, District Assembly, ECU Project with Don, New Zealand Artist Exchange, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, Chilean Rotary Friendship Exchange

President Lynn and Leo attended the ROTARY FOUNDATION GRANT MANAGEMENT SEMINAR on Sunday, March 28th with more than 100 Rotarians from 30 clubs at the Delta Town & Country Inn for the first of three of the district's Rotary Foundation grant management seminars. This is part of the districts participation as a pilot district in the Future Vision Plan.

DGE Penny Offer welcomed the Rotarians and explained the unique role District 5040 has in the future of The Rotary Foundation and the opportunity to use a new approach to humanitarian service.

PDG Kevin Conway, DGE Penny Offer and RRFC Chris Offer gave a series of fast paced  presentations and group exercise on the new grant structure. The new funding model for grants, vocational teams and scholarships was explained. Lively discussions were held on the funding of grants and how future vision has changed the approach to clubs participation in international and local service.  Many questions were asked on the future vision program.

A big thanks to Lynn and Leo for representing our club.  Our club attendance was mandatory for us to quality for future district and RI grants for club projects.

District Assembly: This year's District Assembly was also at the Town & Country on Saturday March 27.  The district assembly prepares incoming club leaders for their year in office. The seminar is also an opportunity for club leaders to meet with district leaders (the district governor-elect, incoming assistant governors, and district committees) who will support club projects and activities.

A special session will be held on certification for Rotary youth programs. If your club is involved in any youth programs you will want your club's youth committee chair to attend this seminar. This includes Youth Exchange, RYLA, Interact, adventures programs or other Rotary youth events.

Who participates:Incoming club leaders - presidents-elect, vice president(s), incoming secretaries, treasurers, committee members, club directors and all interested Rotarians.

Art, Don and Jeff have continued this past week with our club project at the ECU at Delta Hospital.  Graham stopped by to bless the project.  There is a final work party scheduled project, Don says you are more than welcome to help him put the finishing touches. The Tsawwassen Rotary Club is looking at helping out financially on this on going project.

Guillermo updated the club on the upcoming Friendship Exchange with our sister club in Chile.  We will have two couples from Temuco Norte Rotary Club plus Patricio and his wife start their visit with us on May 21.  We will be hosting them for approximately one week.  Planning for activities including confirmation of host families can begin now.  Guillerom recommends that our scheduled visit down to Chile this November may be postponed due to the catastrophic earthquake damage to the country.  The organizing committee will meet once Larry Pretty returns from his vacation and more info on this will be forthcoming.

Irene announced that Jody Wilson's Artist Exchange will be over Friday March 19 when she picks him up at YVR.  There have been nothing but rave reports and Jody has been invited to be part of a major Maori International Carving Project.  Jody will be speaking to both our club and the Tsawwassen Rotary Club on his adventures in New Zealand.

Irene was also very happy to report that 24 Rotarians and friends took part in the most recent Guess Who's Coming to Dinner at four different Host Homes.  Thanks to Linda Ottho, Ray and Joanne, Leo and Dianna, Lynn and John for hosting. Lynn had guests showing up early and intially she was worried they would all be leaving early but they ended up staying really late.  Everyone had fun and enjoyed getting to know each other better.  Who knew Jon Yee was originally studying to be an engineer?

Dennis shared the Rotary Moment with the club and announced that Literacy Month was coming to a close.

Attendance was up this past week with 30 members out of 45 attending. Energy was up and made for a very enjoyable meeting.
