Chu's Rotary Journal - Jul 23 to 29, 2007
There were three Rotary meetings this past week! In additional to our regular Tuesday meeting, many Ladner Rotarians were at Beach Grove Golf and Country Club on Wednesday afternoon for Rob Kamensek's Celebration of Life. On Sunday, Arthur Birk's 2008 Mariner Trek to Seattle resulted in an exciting come from behind win by the Mariners over the Oakland A's, with an whopping 14-10 score.
On Tuesday, we had our Roundtable #1. President Elect and Director of Membership, Peter Podovinikoff led a lively exercise on Club in a Club prospective membership identification. Director of Public Relations Kelly Guichon reminded all members that effective club public relations can only be accomplished through a team effort. During the meeting, many members stood up to speak and ask questions. After the meeting, I was thrilled to hear from Tracy Yolland that it was one of the best club meetings she had ever attended.
On Wednesday, many Rotarians attended Rob Kamensek's Celebration of Life. Out of six people who spoke at the celebration, three were three Past Presidents of the Rotary Club of Ladner. Barry Irvine, who is Chair of Delta Community Foundation, spoke about the tireless contribution of Rob as the Foundation Treasurer. John Thomas attested to the gentleman that Rob was as a golfer, a trusted financial advisor and friend. Ed Klassen applauded Rob for his competitive, fun loving and winning altitude. Rob also was Ed's Secretary during Ed's Presidential year at the Rotary Club of Ladner. Rob followed Ed Klassen (1991-1992) and Barry Irvine (1992-1993) to become Club President in 1993-1994. It was fantastic to witness the deep connections made by a few amazing people through Rotary.
On Sunday, Arthur Birk's 2007 Mariner Trek resulted in another success. For the people on the bus, there was an extra stop this year in Bellingham to pick up Ed and Kathy Klassen, who had flown from Nanaimo to join the trek. Because of the over-an-hour border delay, we did not get any free baseball caps this year. We were treated to a high scoring back and forth contest between the Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics. The Mariners ended up winning 14-10. The best part about the game was the nostalgic music of the 1970's. Marion Burnett led our cheering section for the Mariner's comeback victory. It was a good time by all in rolling back in time at Safeco Field.
Our next Tuesday meeting is Spouse Day. Please bring your partner and come join your fellow Rotarians to listen to Mr. Vince Gowmon speaking on "Remembering to Play".
