Highlights of a presentation Delta Mayor George Harvie gave to Ladner Rotary on February 22, 2022, on the state and future look of the City, included:
• Delta is the second highest community in BC for immunization.
• Throughout Canada Delta is in the top 50 best communities to live and the best in Metro Vancouver, according to the annual Maclean's magazine assessment.
• A number of parks have been improved.
• There is now or will be no fee for use of recreation centres for youth and for those 75 and older.
• A final solution to the Fraser River crossing and replacement of the George Massie Tunnel is now expected for 2030.
 
 
Mayor Harvie also included these highlights.
• Boat launches have been improved.
• Sewer system improvements in the Ladner area.
• Road crosswalks have been added or improved for greater safety.
• Social support and housing has been addressed.
• Climate-related emergencies response has been enhanced.
• A task force on Diversity Equity Inclusion has been formed.
• Short term and longer term housing needs are being addressed.
• Ladner Village water revitalization is finally moving ahead with some demolition and other development starting this summer.
• A master plan for cycling routes has been completed.
• An electric vehicle strategy has been developed and will include 20+ charging stations in the first phase.
• An urban forest strategy has been developed.
• Dredging of South Fraser River waterways continues to be addressed.
• Advocating for more public transit continues.
 
George Harvie was elected to his first term as Mayor of the City of Delta in 2018. Prior to becoming Mayor, George served as Delta’s City Manager from 2002 to 2018. In this role, George led City Hall, ensuring all duties and Council directions were successfully implemented. During his leadership as Delta’s City Manager, George guided the municipality through some of its most challenging projects, including the South Fraser Perimeter Road, Deltaport Third Berth expansion, and the introduction of Delta Fire Department’s Emergency Medical Responder program.
 
Before this appointment as City Manager for Delta, George was employed with the City of Burnaby where he served over 30 years in a number of positions including Deputy City Manager, Director of Human Resources, and Manager of the Environmental Health Department.
 
Delta has been home for George and his wife Gillian for over four decades, where they raised their son Tim and daughter Taryn.
