Deputy Chief Constable Lyle Beaudoin and Staff Sergeant Debra McLeod from Delta PD were our club’s guest speakers with a presentation on the Law Enforcement Torch Run in support of Special Olympics.

In June more than 1,500 law enforcement members and Special Olympics athletes proudly participate in the 2013 Law Enforcement Torch Run in Delta and communities throughout in B.C. to raise awareness and funds for Special Olympics BC.

The Mission of Special Olympics is to provide individuals with intellectual disabilities opportunities to enrich their lives and celebrate personal achievement through positive sport experiences.

In 1980, Special Olympics BC started out with two weekends of games and about 500 participants. Thirty years later, we are providing year-round, high-quality sports programs and competitions for more than 4,100 athletes in 55 communities around the province, with the vital assistance of more than 3,200 trained, dedicated volunteers.

Every year, Delta PD participates in the provincial law enforcement torch run – the run raises awareness for Special Olympics. DPD has raised approximately $100,000 in the last 15 years for Special Olympics.

DPD participates in ‘Adopt an Athlete’ which sponsors an athlete to go to the games. Special Olympic athletes go through training with DPD members (and nearly all won medals in various sports including swimming, golf and 1500 meter race).

The Special Olympics changes the lives of many people living with disabilities in our community and DPD is proud to support local athletes!
