A turkey, root vegetables, canned goods, macaroni and cheese, cranberries, cookies, candy canes and bread are the contents of at least two boxes, sometimes three, that made up hampers delivered to over 550 lower income families and seniors throughout Delta on December 23 to make Christmas a little brighter.

Rotary Club of Ladner contributes $1,000 towards this 30-year-old Christmas hamper tradition, organized by Deltassist. Ladner, Tsawwassen and North Delta Rotarians were among the hundreds who volunteered to pick up, pack and deliver the hampers over the past two weeks and more.

Almost 300 vehicles were involved in the hamper distribution to homes and apartments on December 22 from the warehouse space contributed by Paridon Horticultural Ltd. north of the East Delta Community Hall on Highway 10.

The Christmas hampers project is a true, community project, with all the bread coming from Monte Cristo Bakery, potatoes and root vegetables from five local farms, Kraft Dinner from Kings Links and canned goods and other contributions from schools and food stores which have collected them throughout Delta in recent weeks.

Aside from the three Delta Rotary clubs and Deltassist, there were other organizations which contributed to the project, such as TOOBs, Ladner Legion and Ladies Auxiliary, Lions clubs of Scottsdale, Boundary Bay-Tsawwassen and North Delta Lions, Crescent Downs co-op housing social committee, CUPE 1091, and Kinsmen Club of Ladner/Tsawwassen.
