Mariel Anderson, having earlier started her own event production company which brought many fundraising events to Vancouver, BC, recognized the staggering number of people, who not only struggle with mental health but also those who lose their battles with it across Canada, could not be ignored any longer. Small acts change the world. Mariel realized that a community of people who are able to unite and take small actions towards creating positive impact in their own communities is powerful. Seeing the complete parallel between the passion for community and spirit of giving back -- with a focus on support of mental health and vulnerable youth -- Mariel and her team created a nonprofit foundation focused on 'communities supporting communities', showcasing local talent from a variety of artists.

Mariel Anderson spoke to Rotary Club of Ladner on April 30, 2024, about the Foundation's belief that there is an innate desire within each one of us to contribute to something greater than ourselves.  Service is not just a value; it's a compass that guides us towards a life of purpose, compassion, and fulfillment. It's in giving that we truly receive, and in serving others, we discover the profound beauty of our shared humanity.

She described the 'Change Makers' who continue to create waves across this country, ensuring that all Canadians have access to mental wellness resources and a sense of belonging. They do that through the Foundation's IGNITE programs, which unite the diverse communities in a host city to showcase the talents of artists and performers by giving them a platform to give back on their own terms (performing arts, sports, fashion, visual arts, production team and event team positions etc).

The Foundation works with:
  • local post secondary programs for internship positions (giving students hands on experience in their area of study, supporting their growth);
  • local businesses that sponsor and get involved with the mental health in their own community;
  • individuals and businesses to donate to the auction (giving back on their own terms), as well as the live & online auctions;
  • involve more community members who can give on their own terms while helping us raise more funds.
The funds raised go directly to supporting programs and organizations that are within that host city, working in the field of mental health and vulnerable youth.
