Seven Ladnerians attended District Conference this past weekend. Kudos go to Mike Storey for the excellent work in organizing the registration, to Graham Whitcher, Sergeant-at-Arms and invocator supreme and to Lynn Cameron, District Secretary, responsible for the Minutes of the General Meeting. The General Meeting voted a $10.00 fee increase to sustain Our new Governor plans. Your Supremo voted against as Governor Doge had only asked for $5.00. Now it will be up to us to harmonize this increase.

The Delta Youth Award recognition dinner takes place this Saturday, May 14^th, at the Delta Town and Country. We start gathering at 5:30pm and will piper the nominees at 6pm. This is a very special event hosted
by the three Delta Rotary Clubs. Tickets are $45.00 for adults and $20.00 for young under 16. Please let Lesley Abramson know how many tickets you need, abramson@telus.net no later than Wednesday.

PDG Bob Blacker will be in attendance at our meeting tomorrow. We may be able to convince him to share his work with the Lieutenant-Governor Literacy Initiative in First Nations communities around the province.

Next Year Conference will take place at the River Rock Casino May 17-20, 2012. If you plan to attend, you would be wise to reserve a room ahead of time. Several people could not get a room, especially for the Saturday night, after the Gala dinner and dance. This created a bit of a problem for our esteemed Secretary Mike Storey. Aware of the situation Mike opened his unit to ladies of the Ladner and Tsawwassen clubs so they could get changed. Everybody was very thankful for this arrangement, except that Tsawwassen President-Elect Lesley Abramson left behind her shoes, so when Mike’s wife, mother and mother-in-law returned, Mike was
left with a lot of explaining to do. Was this fair to all concerned?

The Canadian Cancer Society’s Delta Relay for Life starts at the North Delta Secondary School Track on Friday at 6:45 pm and continues until 7:00 am on Saturday morning. The Relay is Canada’s biggest cancer fundraiser, celebrating survivors, the fight against cancer and honouring loved ones who have lost their life. There are a number of ways to participate including registering to take turns running or walking around the track (not required to stay all night); volunteering; or donating money, products and/or services to this non-competitive, fun-filled event. Polio in South-Sudan: PDG Chris Offer gave a short and impassionate presentation about his trip to this region to audit the polio campaign. We will try to twist his harm and get him to repeat his presentation to our club. He put a face to our fundraising efforts.

Your delegates contributed to the literacy legacy of the 2011 District Conference by purchasing a class set of our local historian Gwen Szychter’s book Sarah of Ladner Landing. The author was so pleased with our club initiative that she signed each book and donated a free copy of the sequel Sarah of New Westminster.

Please check your personal information in the Roster and send any update to Mike Storey. Several of you have changed addresses and/or e-mails. Many of you have not listed your cells. We need to be accurate!

Birthdays and anniversaries: Tom and Kathleen Siba’s anniversary was yesterday. Tom and Kathleen looked very posh at the Gala Dinner last Saturday.

We need Counselors for the three Ambassadorial Scholars that will be coming this summer to study at UBC or BCIT next year. The job is not onerous and it doesn’t cost the club anything. The host counselor provides direct assistance to ensure a smooth transition for the scholar ; provides budgeting advice and other
counseling as needed during the study year; arranges visits to club meetings, district functions, and other Rotarian events and homes; assists, as may be requested, with any closing tasks. The host counselor commits for the entire award period. We will discuss our sponsorship at our board meeting tonight. Please let John Anderson know if you want to be a counselor jlanders@direct.ca

Our Program tomorrow is Orv Nickel on Security in the shipping business. Orv, BA, MBA, is a former member of the RCMP’s Commercial Crime Section, where he specialized in white collar crime, including business crime, money laundering and corporate governance matters. He has been a full-time instructor at the RCMP Academy in Regina, lectured at Simon Fraser University on Human Rights and the Constitution Act, and facilitated a program at SFU Harbourside on Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design. He has also been a guest lecturer at the Justice Institute.
