All of us in the Rotary Club of Ladner need to take an active role in attracting and keeping new members. It is not just the role of a few members who advise us. It is the responsibility of all of us.

Reasons to Join Rotary

As Rotary Past District 5040 Governor and Ladner Rotarian Penny Offer says, there are many reasons why individuals join a Rotary Club. Each of us have our own reasons why we joined. Here are just some of the reasons to join a Rotary club.

Friendship. Rotary provides one of the most basic human needs: the need for friends and fellowship.

Business Connections. Rotary consists of a cross section of every business community. Its members come from all walks of life. Rotarians help one another, and collectively help others.

Leadership Development. Rotary is an organization of leaders and successful people. Serving in Rotary positions is like a college education in Leadership.

Continuing Education. Each week at Rotary there is a program designed to keep one informed as to what is going on in the community, nation and world.

Fun. Rotary is a lot of fun. each meeting is fun. The club projects are fun. Social activities are fun. And service is fun.

The Opportunity to Serve. Rotary is a service club. Rotarians provide community service - locally and internationally. This is the best reason perhaps for becoming a Rotarian: the chance to do something for somebody
else.

Might somebody you know have one of these reasons why they might want to join Rotary?
One of the four Rotary Action Plan priorities is "Increase our Impact". That starts with our members: people like you and I, who -- as Rotary's vision statement says --  see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change — across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.

We could investigate our community’s needs and develop creative ways to meet them. That's what we have done in the past. We can connect with other leaders who are changing our community and our world. We can, as our Rotary Action Plan guides us, "Expand our Reach".

In the process we can develop leadership and professional skills with newer members of all ages. We can work together in fellowship connecting with friends and making new ones. In that way we can, as the Rotary Action Plan guides us, "Enhance Participant Engagement" -- among us and with others.

We can explore new ways of doing things together. Be open to change. Create a more diverse membership to reflect our community. Meet in different ways and at different times. That way, as the fourth Rotary Action Plan priority guides us, we can "Increase our Ability to Adapt".

Let's all get behind the leadership and recommendations of our Membership Committee and board to rebuild our capacity to serve our community and our world. Membership Development is just as important as any service project.

In the end, that increased capacity comes down to our own Rotary experience. It is in our own self interest to increase and maintain that positive experience we all continue to enjoy.
