Lynn Cameron and Graham Witcher are two members of Rotary Club of Ladner who have seen much of the world and bring their life's experience, sense of humour and commitment as people of action to service above self. They, like our fellow members, make Rotary such a positive experience of friendship in working with other members in fellowship.
Lynn Cameron
Lynn Cameron, born Lynn Bexley in England, immigrated at a young age to Canada with her parents. She began her working career at BC Hydro in Vancouver. From there she a United Nations office for the General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs (GATT) in Geneva, Switzerland where she enjoyed her work and the international city and the opportunity it provided her for extensive travel throughout Europe. On return to Vancouver she rejoined BC Hydro, married her Australian husband John, and transferred to Mica Creek Hydroelectric project on the Columbia River. During their six years there they enjoyed winter seasons of powder snow and summer seasons of exploring much of the BC interior. When their first of two children arrived on the scene, the family returned to the Vancouver area, where Lynn joined the family business, “The Delta Optimist”. The family expanded the weekly Optimist from one issue to two per week, and started another paper in North Delta/Surrey and one in Richmond.
In the late 1990’s, with the advent of technology and the internet as a threat to the community newspaper business, the family sold the business. Lynn switched to the real estate field and still practices today. She and John have travelled extensively: many times to Australia to visit family; China and three countries in Southeast Asia; North and South American from to the top of Alaska, including kayaking with beluga whales, to the tip of South American, experienced wild life in Africa, walked the Great Wall of China, as well as Hadrian’s Wall in the UK, barged through Europe, walked in Patagonia, Chile. Next stop, in 2022, is Egypt, where her parents were married, including a sailing trip down the Nile.
Lynn considers Rotary her second family. Having helped charter the now defunct evening club in Tsawwassen in 1999, Lynn has been a member of the Rotary Club of Ladner since then. Lynn appreciates the value of Rotary which has helped broaden her knowledge of the world and its people, and encouraged her to give back to our ever changing world and community.
Graham Witcher
Rev. Dr. Graham Witcher grew up in Winchester, England where he attended grammar school. He trained in London and Oxford for ministry in the Baptist Church. He completed a Ph.D. in Pastoral Theology in New College, Oxford University. His studies focused on families with mentally handicapped children and his studies in the Pastoral Method was partial academic training as psychiatric social worker and hospital chaplaincy with nenonatal challenged babies. Eventually Graham emigrated, with wife Valerie, to Nelson, BC, but when the funding for the job there expired, he moved to Red Deer to become chaplain at Michener Centre for mentally challenged. Having accepted ordination into the Anglican Church of Canada, he became rector of St Peter's Anglican Church Okotoks (south of Calgary) and St Paul's Midnapore and taught World Religions at Strathcona Tweedsmuir (private coed school).
Graham became Associate Priest at Christ Church Cathedral, Vancouver - Christ Church Surrey Centre. Then he joined All Saints Anglican Church in Ladner, where Rotarian Stan Thomas, a congregation member, invited him to join the Rotary Club of Ladner.
Three months after retiring from All Saints, he accepted a two-year term as English-speaking Chaplain at Church of the Good Shepherd, Taipei, Taiwan, where he joined the Rotary Club of Taipei and, during that time, challenged the club to open membership to women. On return to Ladner he became Padre to the local Royal Canadian Legion branch. A thought which guides him is: "Silent is an anagram for Listen" (best work done listening rather than speaking). A quote he finds meaningful is: "All meaningful thought is towards action. All meaningful action is towards friendship."
