Rotary Club of Ladner Supports CKNW Orphans Fund
The CKNW Orphans’ fund grew out of a commitment of a fledgling radio station to become a part of the community in which it was established. Radio station CKNW signed on in September 1944, and at Christmas the following year, it seemed like a good idea to make the season a little brighter for the children residing in the Loyal Protestant Home in New Westminster.
The Home housed parentless children, wards of the government and those whose families couldn’t care for them. From those humble beginnings grew the CKNW Orphans’ fund. In 1949, the Fund was registered and incorporated.
When the fund started, the mandate was to help children in the orphanage – thus the name “orphans”.
Today institutions like the Loyal Protestant Home have been phased out but the CKNW Orphans’ Fund continues its dedication to promoting the health and welfare of physically, mentally and socially challenged, as well as those children in B.C. who have been orphaned from society. A cheque for $1000.00 was presented on air by Chris Offer on behalf of the RC of Ladn
er. Talk Show host Simi Sara (and Delta resident) interviewed Chris about Rotary on air.
The total donated this year to the Orphans Fund was $1.7 Million
