At the start of a recent Ladner Rotary club meeting, Rotarian Simbarashe Basvi, Rector of St. David's Anglican Church in Tsawwassen, began an invocation by saying: When someone asked me, 'You are a Priest. Why would you join Rotary, a secular organisation?" I smiled because the answer is simple.
Rotary reflects something I believe deeply: life is a circle of service. Not a circle reserved for the church, or for one group of people, but a circle that holds everyone, faith or no faith, background or no background.
My calling doesn't stop at the pulpit. It continues in the community, in the places where people gather to solve real problems, to lift each other up, and to serve without expecting anything in return.
Rotary's motto, Service Above Self, is not separate from my vocation. Its another expression of it. Its another way of living out compassion, dignity, and hope.
So yes, I am a Priest. And yes, I am a Rotarian. Because service is bigger than any one space, its a circle that connects us all.
