The Rotary troops were out waging a war against Spartina
The Rotary Club of Ladner is still working on getting rid of the Spartina Anglica plant in Boundary Bay and area. This year our volunteers started earlier and are getting the smaller plants before they get to be big clones, although there are a lot of them still out there.
This past Sunday a few Rotarians went out at the foot of 72nd and did a few hours work. Others went out to the foot of 104th on July 8th, on a much sunnier weekend.
Don Burkett, a member of our club seems to have this as his personal environmental challenge managing to go a few times a week, and gets volunteers to go whenever he can get them to go out with him. A few of us have gone out a number of times and Don manages to get others involved in this as well. His dog Daisy usually accompanies him and is turning out to be a great spartina spotter.
The Corporation of Delta will be heading out as well, but with larger paid groups and with bigger equipment, to get the large clone clumps.
To give you an idea of what an infestation of spartina can do here is a video from Oregon - to watch click HERE
