Rachel Hislop-Hook, president DSS Interact Club spoke to the club on September 24 about plans at Delta Secondary School Interact Club which is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Ladner.

Rachel is in Grade 11 at DSS. She was selected by the RC of Ladner to go to Adventures in Citizenship in Ottawa in May of 2013. In February she was a panel member on bullying at the Rotary Peace Forum held by Rotary Districts 5040 and 5050.

The Interact club is fundraising for AKU dease. Alkaptonuria (AKU) is a rare disease, which causes severe, early-onset osteoarthritis. It can be a painful and degenerative disease. Other names for AKU include Black Bone Disease or black urine disease.

The Delta Secondary community is rallying in support of a teacher at the Ladner high school. Pam Mann teaches English and humanities at DSS. Her son, Eshaan, who turns seven next week, suffers from alkaptonuria.

Black bone disease is extremely rare, with fewer than 20 people in Canada and less than 1,000 worldwide known to have it. An acid in the body builds up 2,000 times faster than usual, attacking a person's bones, making them weaker.

DSS Interact club other plans for this school year include:
  • Shore line clean up as part of a national clean up.
  • A blanket and clothing drive
  • Delta Assist food bank
Club members are also looking forward to assisting with the Rotary TV Auction and helping to make up the Christmas hampers.

Clubs day DSS is next week and they hope to significantly increase membership in the Interact Club. There are 15 members currently after the grade 12 class graduated in June.
