Pennsylvania Rotary Friendship Team

Our speaker on June 24^th was Cindy and Chris Hornaman from District 7430, Pennsylvania, members of the Rotary Friendship Exchange Team. The Rotary Club of Ladner was their last stop before returning home.

The team was in District 5040 from June 12 to 24. They visited Metro Vancouver, Whistler and took a tour up the Duffy Lake Road and down the Fraser Canyon. The team was hosted in the homes of local Rotarians.

Cindy Hornaman gave a number of unique facts about Pennsylvania.

Pennsylvania borders six other states: New York to the north; New Jersey to the east; Delaware to the southeast; Maryland to the south; West Virginia to the southwest, and Ohio to the west. Pennsylvania also shares a water border with Ontario to the northwest across Lake Erie.

Philadelphia and Pittsburgh are the major cities. Our speaker is from Allentown, PA, which is the states’ third largest city with just over 100,000 people. As of 2013, Pennsylvania has an estimated population of 12,773,801.

Pennsylvania Dutch people means "German" or "Teutonic" rather than "Netherlander." "Deutsch," which in English became, misleadingly, Dutch.

Little know facts:

Pennsylvania is the first state of the fifty United States to list their web site URL on a license plate.
In 1909 the first baseball stadium was built in Pittsburgh.
Hershey, PA is considered the Chocolate Capital of the United States.
In 1913 the first automobile service station opened in Pittsburgh.
In 1946 Philadelphia became home to the first computer.
The first daily newspaper was published in Philadelphia on Sept. 21, 1784.
In Hazleton, there is a law on the books that prohibits a person from sipping a carbonated drink while lecturing students in a school auditorium.
Philadelphia is the site of the first presidential mansion.

What is Rotary Friendship Exchange?

What is Rotary Friendship Exchange?

The Rotary Friendship Exchange Program provides a means through which Rotarians in one part of the world can experience life in another country or culture. Its goal is to advance international understanding and goodwill through person-to-person connections across national boundaries.

Friendship Exchange Team Program in which Rotarians, often couples, typically ten to twelve in number, visit several communities in the host district for a period of time up to four weeks. The number of persons on the team and the length of stay are flexible; the districts involved agreeing on those details before the exchange occurs. The program is coordinated by district Friendship Exchange committees and carried out at no expense to Rotary International.

The next District 5040 Rotary Friendship Exchange (RFE) will be held from September 3 to 13, 2014. Rotarians in District 7430, southeastern Pennsylvania, will host the District 5040 Team in this beautiful and historic part of the world. District 7430 is around Allentown PA, close it is to Philadelphia, Gettysburg, Atlantic City, Amish country and many more local places of interest. A bonus should be the start of the fabulous fall foliage.

Participants in a RFE team pay their own air fare to Newark or Philadelphia), sightseeing fees, local transportation costs (a shared van), Rotary Club visits, and meals away from your hosts.

These trips are perfect for couples and singles, and have been thoroughly enjoyed by all past RFE participants.
