An old man who lived near the border lost his horse. His neighbours came to comfort him, but he said, “Who knows. This may be a blessing.”

A few months later, the horse returned, bringing with it a fine wild horse. The neighbours congratulated him, but the old man said, “Who knows? This may be a misfortune.”

His son began riding the wild horse, fell off, and broke his leg. Again, the neighbours expressed sympathy, but the old man replied, “Who knows? This may be a blessing?”

Soon afterwards, war broke out, and all the young men were drafted into the army. Many never returned, but, because the old man's son had a broken leg, he was not conscripted and survived.

Service is a journey of unexpected turns that lead to unexpected outcomes. We don't judge every setback as a failure, or every success as final. Instead, we stay committed, adapt and continue serving with hope.
