Dr. Jack Taunton, long time Director of the Allan McGavin Sports Medicine Centre at UBC has a spinal cord supported with a structure of metal parts. Yet he walked from Tsawwassen, where he recently moved, to the Delta Town and Country Inn to join Jody Mann, of Paris Orthotics, at a Ladner Rotary club meeting, in presenting on a sports medicine program in Uganda. Already the program is having such a beneficial impact on the lives of not only athletes who now learn how to avoid and treat sports injuries, but on many others who learn about the value to their health of regular exercise.

In 1977 Dr. Taunton established Canada's first Sports Medicine and Sports Science medical centre, with physiotherapy, orthopedics, primary care and research units, as the Allan McGavin Sports Medicine Centre at UBC where he has been Director of the Centre for many years.
Dr. Taunton has acted as medical officer for the Canadian Olympic Team at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles, Seoul and Barcelona, and Chief Medical Officer in Sydney and, in 2010, in Vancouver. He also served as team physician to the Vancouver Grizzlies professional basketball club and, the Vancouver Canadians baseball team and the Women's National Field Hockey team.
He has been honoured with the Canadian Sports Medicine and Science Award, Canadian Sports Physician of the Year, and Outstanding Faculty Community Service award from UBC.
